Gardenia was invited to record traditional compositions, specifically from Brava island, written by Silvestre Faria, one of the greatest poets and songwriters of his time.
In October 2015, Faria's prestigious work was nominated and won the CVMA music award of the year. The "morna " entitled “Marlene,” which was once scribbled on a piece of paper 62 years earlier, came to life through Gardenia's voice.
"When a song is genuine, it is immortal!"
"I believe in pouring your soul when you write songs. To me, the language of music is all about emotions."

THE SOULFUL VOICE OF CAPE VERDE
Born in the city of Praia, Santiago of Cape Verde Islands, Gardenia is an internationally acclaimed artist descended from a family of celebrated Cape Verdean singers. She pursued the traditional style of singing “morna” (ballad genre) from Brava island and beyond. She inherited her musical talent from her mother and maternal grandmother, who were popular for their theatrical performances.
The Cape Verdean music heritage and tradition are vital to Gardenia's artistic development in her renditions of Cape Verdean melodies. After spending most of her childhood in Lisbon, Portugal, she migrated to the United States of America. Three years later she began singing publicly in Rhode Island as a singer of a local Cape Verdean band “Tropical Power.” That was just the beginning for young Gardenia. She went from being a local artist to a global performer.
After launching her career as a solo artist, Gardenia became the first singer from Cabo Verde to sign a record deal with a multinational record company PolyGram. Equally, in her determination to succeed, she became the first Cape Verdean female singer to earn a degree in music from the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
In addition to being a committed performing artist, she graduated from Hofstra University in New York with an MA of Liberal Arts majoring in Education, concentration in foreign languages.
The mixture of personal and musical influences from her childhood in Cape Verde and Portugal, her adolescence in Rhode Island and California, and her adulthood in Massachusetts, New York, and Florida, have all shaped her musical passion and multicultural beliefs.
